WAS THE STAR OF ANTINOUS A COMET? By Flamen Antinoalis Antonius Subia

AS there is a COMET in the sky, which comes at the most opportune time, when the world seems to be falling apart all on its own without the need for ominous portents of worse to come, I thought I would share two new texts I have found which concern the STAR OF ANTINOUS and are also about comets. 

The discussion for many years has been whether the original Star of Antinous was a Super Nova or a Comet. The ancients did not know what a comet really was so they sometimes referred to them as New Stars. 

Aristotle distinguished between two types “bearded” new stars and “combed” new stars, the first had a tail, the second had a halo, but both of these moved across the sky from constellation to constellation..whereas a third type, simply called Stella Nova, did not move and did not have either a tail nor a head of hair...we might call these Shaven New Stars! 

The Ancient texts do not say much about the Star of Antinous, Dio Cassius says that it was all a fiction made up by Hadrian's associates:

“Finally, he declared that he had seen a star which he took to be that of Antinous, and gladly lent an ear to the fictitious tales woven by his associates to the effect that the star had really come into being from the spirit of Antinous and had then appeared for the first time. On this account, then, he became the object of some ridicule.”

By his associates, we assume the Greek scholars who Hadrian always kept around. Dio Cassius says that they were trying to impress Hadrian, who went along with the story. 

Hadrian was nobody's fool, he was well studied in astronomy and would have known if there was really a new star in the sky, or if they were just flattering him. That is all the ancient sources say about the star, no description and no location given. 

The astronomer Ptolemy, who was 10 years older than Antinous and would have been in his prime years at the Museion of Alexandria when Hadrian and Antinous visited, and would have been well aware of the New Star and how it had been attributed to Antinous, some years later in his book the Almagest placed the Constellation Antinous next to Aquila, the Eagle. 

This is how we know where the Star of Antinous took place and the comparison to Ganymede and Jupiter with Antinous and Hadrian, justified the name change (modern astronomers have since erased Antinous from the sky.) 

The Star of Antinous appeared in a fixed place, within the boundaries of the 6 or 7 stars assigned by Ptolemy, there is no mention of a comet. 

The Star of Antinous appears on a few of his coins, shown as a star above his shoulder, but there is no tail, beard or hair. The Star of Bar Kochba the leader of the Jewish revolt, whose name means, Son of the Star, appears on Jewish coins in the year 133, it is also shown as a star without a tail. 

Chinese records appear to record that a comet was seen in the early morning sky just before sunrise in late January in a year corresponding to 133. The Chinese did not differentiate between Supernova Stars and Comets.

The first person to assert that it was what we now understand to be a SuperNova Star visible with the naked eye was Alexandre Guy Pingre in 1783, who while describing major comets of the past makes an entry for the year 132. 

He relates the story as told by Dio Cassius and substantiates why he believes there really was a star and that it was not just “court flattery” and that the change of name from Ganymede to Antinous is proof not only that something really happened, but also that it wasn't a comet. 

He says another astronomer named Nicholas Struyck said that the comet of 132 was the same comet as the one observed in 1652, which seems to have passed through the Constellation Antinous. 

I still have not yet found a drawing of the path of this comet, but I'll keep trying, also I need to find Struyck's text because it is one of the first modern references to Antinous. 

Pingre says that the comet of 1652 cannot have been the same comet as in 132 because it did not "Appear" in the Constellation of Antinous, like Dio Cassius says...and we can continue...it did not stay in Aquila, but like all comet's it moved across the sky. 

And so what Pingre is concluding is that the Star of Antinous was a New Star, what we call a Nova and understand to be a previously unknown star that suddenly flares up so incredibly that it goes from completely invisible to visible with a telescope, which happens surprisingly often. 

And then there are the wonderful occasions called Supernovas which can be seen with the naked eye, they are very rare, but happen from time to time. 

There was a SUPER NOVA IN 1999 in the constellation Aquila, and the brightest supernova ever recorded also occurred in Aquila in 1918. There have been about 11 lesser Novae in Aquila from 1993-2015, so the possibility that there was a dramatic Supernova in 132 that Hadrian and his Greek Astronomers witnessed is very probable.

The second text I found is the observations made by Thaddeus Hagecius of the 1577 comet. As the comet progresses across the sky he plots its course and the length of its tail by measuring how far it is from the stars of the constellations it passes through. When it enters Antinous, he takes a moment to explain that Antinous was the boy who Hadrian deliciously "had." 

One important thing about the comet of 1577 is that another astronomer named Tycho Brahe was able to determine that the comet was further away from Earth than the moon by comparing the observations of Hagecius and calculating the difference from where he observed it from his own location. So in a sense, Antinous played a part in this discovery.

The pictures on this entry are of the comet of 1680 which is said to be one of the most important because it was the first comet discovered with a telescope and was observed by the most famous astronomers of the time including Newton. This comet also passed through Antinous.

Antinous gets a lot of celestial action it seems. So as we enjoy the disturbing omen in the sky of more fun times as yet to come for our world on this eve of destruction, please enjoy these references about Comets and Antinous given in French and Latin with my translation.

The Year:
132. Hadrian listened with satisfaction to those who said that the soul of Antinous had changed into a new star, which had been seen for a few days. Does this flattery of court prove decisively the reality of this new star? Hadrian, said Dio Cassius, pretended to see the star of Antinous: that was enough to make the courtiers see what perhaps they did not really see. Without a doubt they saw, or thought they saw this star in the constellation of Ganymede elevated by the Eagle, and apparently this is what occasioned the change of name of Ganymede to that of Antinous. We admit the reality of the star, it remains however to decide whether the star was a comet. Struyck believed it; he even judges that this comet is that of 1652; but if that is the case, the new star could not have appeared in the constellation of Antinous.

ANTINOUS INVICTUS AND THE SOLSTICE

ON Thursday at 16:29 Universal Time (8:29 a.m. at the Hollywood Temple of Antinous) the sun "stands still" ("Sol Stasis") — the 21 December 2017 Solstice. 

This is a special day every year in the Religion of Antinous for it marks the return of Sol Invictus, the Unconquerable Sun.

The return of the sun is the Conquest of Unconquered Light over chaos and darkness, the emergence of Phanes-Eros-Dionysus from the cosmic egg (image at right).

On this day, we observe the moment when the unknown god Bythus-Narcissus gazed into the pool of the abyss and saw his own reflection. 

His image caused the birth of the thrice-great Phanes-Eros-Zagreus, the saviors, who together are called Antinous Invictus.

The three-fold mystery of their birth is the descent of Phanes-Beauty, Eros-Love and Zagreus-Ecstasy into our world. 

These great spirits are the divine light of Antinous the God, it is their presence at the ground of our soul that is our immortal spark.

Within us all is the perfect image of the perfect face of light and love, a reflection of Narcissus-Bythus gazing down into the darkness of our world.

Antinous Invictus the perfect image of the perfect face of light and love will illuminate the way ahead.

It was Hadrian's dream to create the perfect civilization ... a civilization based on the Hellenistic principles of love, beauty, learning and tolerance. And it was his dream to create the perfect religion ... a religion which would encompass all others.

In the Northern Hemisphere today is the Winter Solstice and the days will be getting longer now. In the Southern Hemisphere it is the Summer Solstice and the days will become shorter now.

Wherever you live on this blue marble of ours, it is the same moment in the eye of Antinous the Gay God.

SUPERNOVA IN ANTINOUS CONSTELLATION HERALDS SOMETHING WONDERFUL AHEAD

SOMETHING Wonderful just happened in the sky! A Nova Star was just discovered a few days ago in the constellation Aquila, which is part of what was once called constellation Antinous, where the sacred star appeared to announce that Antinous had become a god.

It is our general belief that the mysterious star was a Super Nova, visible with the naked eye. 

The last time a Super Nova occurred in Aquila was in 1999 when I decided to devote my life to Antinous ... I took the star as a sign that the time had come to re-found our once forgotten religion.

There have only been about three new stars in Aquila since, all of them too faint to be seen without telescopes. 

This is the fourth, and while unfortunately is it very dim, it is significant because, first of all its a NOVA IN AQUILA! 

Secondly because it has been Years since the last one ... maybe since 2009, Im not sure ... but thirdly, it is taking place just as we are about to enter the Sacred Nights of Antinous.

The New Star Represents change, a new era, and as there have been a number of signs lately of change lately, I think this is like a confirmation that something wonderful is about to happen.

I've been waiting for a Nova to occur for a long time now, and at last here it is.

The light of the New Star shine upon you all!

SOMETIMES A CHEAP EBAY BARGAIN TURNS OUT TO BE A WORK OF ART

I had a huge surprise during tonight's PLOTINA MOON. 

I bought a new KYLIX for the ritual ceremonies at the HOLLYWOOD TEMPLE OF ANTINOUS. 

I found it on eBay for $15. This was supposed to replace the pewter kylix which we have been using for a few years. 

I thought this one looked good, it had little lion head handles, and it was silver plated ... or so I thought ....

But even when I was cleaning it I could tell that something was different. 

And then I saw the 925 mark which means it's Sterling. 

This thing is solid silver!

It turns out that this is probably one of the fabulous items I have ever found. 

It is from Thessalonica Greece. 

I don't know the age, but as far as I am concerned and how I feel, this cup is elevated to an exalted status ... the most beautiful object Antinous has given to me to elevate his cult.

May Antinous-Vertumnus spread his Abundance

upon your lives!!!

Tonight I performed a sacred Fontus Bath ... And received powerful visions ... there was more than I was able to handle in fact, I even reached a point where I had to try to make it stop because the heat was becoming more than I could stand. 

But the main vision that I saw was Homotheosis rising up from my bath, pouring over the edge and the flooding the land and sea and reaching out over the world.

I saw that it was reaching everywhere and it was coming forth from my bath like some kind of Castalia! 

I saw Dionysus coming forth from a river...he was wearing sunglasses...seated on a throne with wheels, being pulled out of a river by drunks! 

He was the one who made the power of Homotheosis come forth!

After the bath to my great, but not surprised enjoyment ... The moon here in Los Angeles actually does look blue! There was a halo of blue in the clouds around it. 

My photo (above) doesn't capture the colors very well ... but it was beautiful! 

May Homotheosis bring us abundance this year!

GEMINI NEW MOON INCENSE RITUAL By Flamen Antinoalis Antonius Subia

FOR the Mercury New Moon in Gemini...I consecrated my new sacred vessel to store the Frankincense that we use in our Antinous ceremonies. I searched long and hard for the right vessel and finally found a pewter bowl with a lid that is exactly what I was searching for. 

It is important that it have three legs because tripod vessels are sacred to Antinous-Apollo, the form of Antinous that rules over the burning of incense. 

I recently stocked up on frankincense and we blessed it together as a group at the Equinox ceremony. The offering of incense is one of the most important parts of our ritual.

It is the communal act, an act of devotion to Antinous, a demonstration of faith in him, and by offering incense before a sacred idol, we are upholding the ancient traditions of the Roman religion. 

It is one of the elements of our tradition that makes us part of Roman paganism and mildly differentiates us from other forms of modern pagan spirituality. 

It brings us closer to Antinous individually and also as a group because we mingle our "tears"of incense together upon a single coal and join our spirits together in one column of smoke rising up to our god. We use a tripod incense burner because this was sacred to Apollo who is one of the foremost gay gods and a major component of the Antinous "alter-egos."

I also stocked up on coals, enough to last a long while...I was down to the very last coal at the Boar Hunt and lately they've been difficult to light since the lighter fluid they are infused with had all dried out...hopefully now they will just light more easily. 

This is also the part of the ceremony where I need an assistant...or altar boy to light the coals for me while I read the Litany. Eventually I would like to add more components that will require a co-priest to carry out certain functions while I read.

I think that after so many years of conducting these ceremonies I must now prepare a litany specifically for the lighting of the coals since there is so much meaning and symbolism in igniting the cold black lump of carbon with the all-consuming FIRE of Antinous power...until it glows hot and orange, ready to receive the piety and devotion that we shed upon it as an offering to the God we love.

With deep faith we place a tear of our feelings upon the burning coal as a way of showing belief in what he stands for and what he means to us. 

The lighting of the coal is exactly the same as what Homotheosis does in our heart when the power of Antinous touches us with his Fire. 

The beautiful perfumed smoke is our Homo-psyche rising up to meet him and become as one with him...to become Homotheos...Just as the Eagle took Catamitus (ganymede) into his wings...of smoke and fire...and ascended to the heavens where the boy became one with Jupiter the God. 

The offering of incense is perhaps the most significant part of the ceremony...and tonight...the realization of what this means is the message that the Gemini New Moon has conveyed to me. 

It is an act of tremendous Homotheosis power...not only in the brief moment of connection that is made with Antinous by each individual as they step forward, take some incense and offer it to him, but also in the profound connection that is formed between us all as a group. The importance of what this means has suddenly become clear to me as never before!

May the Blessing of the New Moon be with you all...and may the power to convey Homotheosis be with me ... and with all those who take up this calling.

Tonight is the Scarab Moon...(waxing crescent in Leo)

In the old gypsy card system this is the known as The Key,

which unlocks hidden treasures,

It is only those to whom the secret treasure is intended,

that the key is given.

...I feel that I have found one of these sacred keys.

The Scarab is the bringer of a new dawn...sudden change.

I am told that his coming will bring unexpected blessings,

Beyond expectation...and that I should not ask what to expect,

I must be open to anything that Antinous may bring.

The Scarab is HOPE...like a star rising up out of darkness.

Tonight...I see a power rising...with a key in hand.

In weakness, I pray this key for me...and not another

In strength, I know there is a great destiny within my soul,

waiting patiently in a box...for the one to turn his key.
